Behind-The-Scenes Pix #11: THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL (1978)

Harrison Ford and Peter Mayhew reprise their Star Wars characters Han Solo & Chewbacca on a cheap mock-up of the Millennium Falcon cockpit (notice that it has no floor!) for the infamous 1978 television spectacular, The Star Wars Holiday Special - which aired on CBS 33 years ago today.

  1. Behind the scenes of the Holiday Special?! The mind boggles at the concept!

But I think I understand the Special better after having seen this photo. It is clear that it takes place not in the real Star Wars universe, but the same one as The Flintstones.

  2. I wonder if Harrison Ford in his carpenter guise knocked that up in an hour or 2, It's worth watching the horror that is the Holiday special too see the Boba Fett cartoon.

  3. Gods, I saw that when it first aired, and it's haunted me ever since... Wookie porn.... brrrr.... but why didn't they use the actual MF set? I'm sure it wasn't disassembled with the sequel plans already in motion.

  5. Lizard: Could it be because the Holiday special was taped in Burbank, California and the real MF cockpit set was at either Elstree or Shepperton Studios in England?

  6. Even as a Star Wars-obsessed 8-year-old in 1978, I thought the Holiday Special looked cheap and patched together. And I don't even remember Carrie Fisher, glassy-eyed and barely able to stand, singing the Star Wars theme WITH WORDS! Thank God for bootlegs.
